My friend Melissa

I know that I've said it a million times, but I love having a friend nearby that sews. Melissa from Scavenger Hunt lives fifteen minutes away from me and we have met up quite a few times to sew and hangout. We aren't total besties (yet. I am working on forcing her into it and she doesn't know it muahaha), so I was super surprised and excited when she gave me a birthday gift. Check out all those awesome treasures! My favorite gift was the magnetic pin tray that she MADE me. She just posted a tutorial, so you guys can make one too.

It's my first magnetic pin tray and I am officially a fan! What about you guys, pincushions or magnetic plates? Which do you prefer?

  1. I love magnetic trays. I bought 2 from the Automotive store. It's nice that you can toss pins in its general direction and it'll grab them :)

    You're lucky, I wish I had a sewing friend nearby. :)

  2. That's a tough one. I have both & there are + & - to each. The magnetic one makes it a snap to clean up all those stray pins, especially ones that may have fallen on the carpet, but I often prick my fingers when I reach over to grab one because the pins are stuck to it every which way. The pin cushion is just the opposite. It's more work to clean up because the pins only stick in one way, but the ball/blunt end is always out so I never get pricked. Also, the magnetic trays don't slip on your wrist (at least not the ones I've seen) like some pin cushions do. I personally don't have a wrist pin cushion, but I can see how it might be handy. The magnetic trays that I've seen don't come with a pin sharpener either. Of course, I'm the dorky beginner that didn't even know the thing dangling off my tomato cushion actually served a purpose til a few weeks ago. Duh! LOL!

Still, finger pricks or not, I do tend to prefer my magnetic tray because I can haphazardly flick pins out as they approach my presser foot & my tray will catch them as they slide off my machine's arm. :)

  3. I haven't used a magnetic tray yet, but I use my pin cushion cuff every time I sew so far!

  6. I use them all. Magnetic trays, pin cushions that sit on my sewing table, pin cushions that sit on my wrist, and even tins to hold my pins. Anything to keep them off the floor!

  9. Wow! What amazing gifts! Magnetic plates are so great, especially since I'm really clumsy and tend to upset mine all the time!
