Miz Mozelle dress (puke free!)

Imagine this scenario: you're excited to wear your new dress to Santa Barbara because it's super comfy and it will be fun to have a new place to take photos. Unfortunately, on the drive there Grandma is chillin in the passenger seat wearing sweatpants, a sweatshirt, and has a quilt on her lap while blasting the heater. Mom is driving like a psycho on the 154. I'm doing some yoga breathing exercises and praying my ass off that I don't puke all over my new dress. Luke is staring at me and praying his ass off that I don't throw up on him. True story. I made it to Santa Barbara without puking on myself, but unfortunately I managed to get some dirt smudged on my dress and I didn't notice it until after the photos. Dirt is better than vomit, though.

Let's talk about the pattern, it's way more interesting than talking about me getting carsick. The dress is the Miz Mozelle pattern by Jamie Christina and it was my first time using one of her patterns. Sometimes, I get kind of hesitant about using patterns from a company/someone that I have never sewn with before because I get worried that I won't be able to follow the instructions. Luckily, Jamie's instructions are super clear and straightforward. The illustrations were helpful and I didn't find myself getting lost or confused at all. Success!

The fabric is a jersey from Mood that I purchased almost a year ago. I am not ashamed to say that I am 100% ripping off one of Jamie Christina's samples from her pattern. Her model is wearing a white dress with black bias tape. The only difference is that my fabric has polka dots. I'm being a copycat!

I felt like living on the edge, so I didn't make a muslin. Luckily, I'm pretty happy with the fit and how everything turned out. The only thing I would do differently would be to use a bias tape around the inside neckline that actual matched the fabric. Sometimes it shows and I would prefer to have used a lighter color, not black. But that's such a minor thing to gripe about.

Here is an Instagram photo of me and B$ aka my mom.

Have any of you sewn with Jamie's patterns? I am now officially a fan, so I bought myself the Sol Hoodie pattern and I can't wait to start working on it!

  1. I made a dress from this pattern a few years ago and I loved it too. Yours looks wonderful and the trauma of the car journey doesn't show on your face or your dress :)

  2. Really cute dress! Glad that you survived the car trip to Santa Barbara, without major incident. Thanks for the tip off on the Hoodie pattern. I live in a hoodie on the weekends in the winter and have been wanting to find a pattern so I can make my own.

  11. I HATE the 154, I TOTALLY understand : ) I love the polka dotty version of your dress, much better than plain ol' white. I'll have to go give these patterns a gander now that I see yours. Glad the rest of the trip went better than the start!

  12. I still need to make up this pattern. I had it out but didn't have enough fabric. Yours is really cute, love the polka dots! I'm a horrible traveler long distance. I'm either puking or drugged up on Dramamine and a huge grouch ass...fun times!

  15. This is really, really cute! I'm so glad you didn't throw up on it! My grandma was a really choppy driver (braking and hitting the gas really hard), and she had to keep a bucket in the back seat because one of my siblings or I got sick in the car every time she drove us somewhere! Ugh. I haven't tried this pattern, but I've made the Mission Maxi (which is probably the easiest pattern in the world to make). Love this on you!

  18. I have this pattern in my stash, and have some really cute jersey that I think would be perfect. After seeing your version, I totally want to get mine done next weekend!
Quick question: What kind of bias tape did you use, and what size did you cut?

  19. I've always been curious about this pattern! Haven't seen a ton made up, but this looks totally comfy and fun and DEFINITELY puke free! I love it! (and not just cuz it's sans puke...) Such an adorable jersey print - it goes perfectly with the black bias binding! You're such a doll - love that picture of you and your Mom! You've got good genes, girl!

  20. I've never used one of Jamie's patterns but I've heard good things. Your dress is super cute! I totally didn't notice the dirt spot until you pointed it out. And yes, dirt is way better than vomit. (I get super carsick too!!) Can't wait to see your Sol Hoodie. I've been eyeing it for some time, but I generally have a hard time buying patterns for basics, especially when they are knits.
