My husband called me a hoarder

We're all friends here, right? So you won't judge me on the state of my sewing room... right? You guys, my sewing room has been a nightmare for the last month or so, it got so bad that my husband jokingly called me a hoarder. If anyone else called me a hoarder I wouldn't have cared, but Luke has been inside legit hoarder houses, so that comment was a wakeup call and made me realize that I need to get my sewing life cleaned up!

Here is the "before" picture. Oh in case you forgot, you're not judging me, remember? I have somewhat of an explanation: we switched rooms a month ago and I haven't had time to completely purge/organize/clean/decorate. It's funny how you can make time to sew, but not time to clean ;) But at least there weren't hoarder goat trailers throughout my stuff in the room!

The "after" picture, so much better!! Now the room feels so good and clean, I just want to stay in and sew. Hopefully I can get my inspiration board updated and decorations hung up within the next few weeks.

That gray bin holds my fabric. You can't tell in the "before" picture, but there were bags of fabric on top of it. I went through the bin, sorted out my scraps, and now all my new fabric (I decided that anything uncut with a decent amount of yardage is considered "new") fits perfectly. I put the scraps in a Trader Joes bag in my closet. I know that saving it seems like such a hoarder move, but Caitlin posted a picture on Instagram of a cool quilt she made out of scraps and I want to make one too.

I also treated myself to some new sewing items. The steam button on my last iron broke, so I got this one at JoAnn's over the weekend for 30% off! Did you know that September is National Sewing Month? I didn't until JoAnn's told me on my receipt.

My second purchase was this sewing basket. My last one was cheaply made and falling apart, so I bought this one. A sturdy sewing basket is very important to me, as I like going to friends houses and need a basket to carry all my supplies, but normally I keep the basket on the corner of my desk with all my VIP sewing supplies that I use on a regular basis. Oh, and I moved my thread closer to me, so there is no excuse for me not to change my thread/bobbins!

My weekend ended on an amazing note, when I got this package from Rochelle in the mail. I won a giveaway on her blog and she put in some extra goodies for me. It was such a thoughtful and perfect surprise. And those headscarves, LOVE!!! She didn't know it at the time, but my go to hairstyle is a topknot with a scarf, so the ones she sent me couldn't be more perfect for me. Thank you so much, Rochelle!

  1. Hunny, you are sooooo not a hoarder! If you saw MY sewing space right now?! You'd probably judge me lol. My brother just got a job in VT so he's living in what used to be my sewing room. I'm now sewing in the dining room and it's a mess. I really need to get my butt in gear and organize it. I feel like a slob!

But on a lighter note, I'm so glad you like the stuff I sent you! Maybe Santa will send you more for Christmas hehe ;)

  2. I think we all go through this problem - and my sewing room can turn into a dumping ground for everybody elses 'I don't know what to do with it' stuff, not just mine. In fact, my space is in need of a clean out now, so I'll probably be doing that on the weekend instead of sewing... boo!

    1. He doesn't have a problem with my fabric, more a problem with my "organization." :)

  4. Your sewing room looks great. I like your new sewing basket. I'm considering one of those myself because I'm taking another class and will be hauling my supplies to school twice a week. The reusable grocery bag I've been using is starting to look pretty sad. :(

    1. Oh my gosh Marrie, you have to get one. It will make life so much easier for you! When I went to my quilting class every week it made packing and carrying so much easier.

  5. I love your sewing room, it's fab! But I like a bit of mess in my sewing room, I think it makes me more creative. My husband disagrees though....

  8. LOL, it really doesn't look so bad ;) But doesn't it feel great to have an organized room to work in? I have a few stacks of fabric that don't have a home, so they get shuffled around the room depending on where I'm working. I guess I need to hurry up and use them!!
Your iron looks really spiffy--I'll be curious to hear how you like it. I have a cheapy that leaks water, so one of these days I need to upgrade.

    1. What it comes down to is that I have been lazy! It's like when you move and you dread the unpacking part!

  10. You can see the floor in the above picture. You cannot see the floor in my sewing room at the moment. It looks lovely after, but I don't think the before is bad at all.

  11. Your sewing room is lovely! I definitely don't think you've hit hoarder stage yet, but I understand feeling the pressure when the males in our lives say it's a bit much! You've got a fabulous clean space perfect for creating and dreaming - well done!

  12. how great does organization feel? My life seems so out of order, out of whack if my apartment/desk/car is not clean. It's kind of depressing how depressed I can get if I am not in order. Anyways, your sewing room looks much much better!

    1. Oh my attitude about the room has completely changed! I love it so much and I know I will love it even more when I decorate it.

  13. My apartment often looks much worse than that - mind you that's more to do with messy partner syndrome than my preferences - still, I am guilty of 'organized chaos' from time to time, as well lol

And I save scraps too - they could come in handy for trims, pocket linings, facings, or even testing techniques! I have a bag of them hanging in the closet of the art room along with my pattern tracings :)

    1. Good to know that you save scraps too. I used a ton of small pieces making a bed for Frankie (the dog) when we got her, but I'm not sure what to do with the larger pieces...
