Are you ready?

Are you ready to sew your skirt this weekend? I am, I'm excited now that my muslin fits well! My next step is cutting out the fabric with my revised pattern pieces, but last night I decided to get a head start and work on the template for the scallops. The book is very clear on how to do this, but I thought I would share how mine turned out.

First I traced a curve from one of the facing pieces and drew vertical lines, so I knew where the curve stopped. I measured 5/8 inch many different times from the curve I traced. This was easily done with my french curve.

Having the 5/8 inch mark was very helpful! I then used the rounded edge of the french curve to connect the marks.

I cut out the shape and ended up with this. Well, to be honest it took several tries to get it right, but I wanted the template to be perfect, so I didn't struggle/get frustrated later on when I was sewing.

I tested the template and the curves matched up, so I now feel more confident about sewing. Invisible zippers are another story though... I will be referring to page 23 in the book/this tutorial if I get lost.

What about you, are you ready to sew this weekend? I can't wait to see the finished skirts on Monday! Be sure to post them in the Flickr group, so we can all see them.

  1. Hooray, good job with the template-- tracing the stitching line is exactly the part where I'll get lazy! Someone in the sew-along (apologies, can't remember who!) mentioned that they'd made a cardboard scallop-shaped pressing tool from this template to aid in shaping the hemline. Brilliant, right?

My final fabric hasn't materialized yet. I'm getting antsy-- I didn't realize it was coming from England when I ordered it. Whoops! Hope you're all set!

    1. SUCH a clever idea!!!

      Did you order something special?

    2. I did! It's some adorable out-of-print Ikea home dec fabric. If it doesn't show up in time, I think I'll raid my linen stash for a bright-colored solid instead. :)

  2. I hope all goes well, I love the idea of the cuboard template. I have made a wearable muslin and I'm sticking to that for the time being, although I have learnt lessons and I still have enjoyed joining in and seeing what everyone else makes!

  3. I started on my scallops last night - I traced the scallop pattern onto my fabric and sewed at the s-l-o-w-e-s-t speed I could. And I'm proud to say they turned out fabulously!
Can't wait to see everyone's skirts!

  4. I'm with you - more nervous about the zipper than the curves. My muslin zipper is only semi- invisible. Thinking about maybe hand picking it (never tried that) but Denim might not be the best fabric choice for that.

  5. I messed up the muslim on the scallops(I trimmed too closely and knicked the fabric). That will not happen again. The fit is perfect.I will do the scallop part as slowly and carefully as I can. Tonight I will cut out a batick fabric-it is lovely! This sew along has really helped me.

  6. Arghhhh! I'm totally behind, and am going away this weekend for Burns Night celebrations, so no sewing for me! I haven't even photographed my muslin yet... what a slacker!
