Baby shower for Brittany

On Sunday Luke and I took a break from wine tasting and went to Brittany and Sammy's baby shower/surprise birthday party for Sammy. I got to give them the quilt I had been working on for the last few weeks. I think they liked it!

1. Why don't I learn from past mistakes? I was talking on the phone and cut fabric in the wrong place. Now I have done this TWICE. The phone and rotary cutter do not mix! Learn from my mistakes and don't do this!

2. Being a business owner takes a lot of time. I work a lot and Luke works more than me. Today he worked for 12 hours.

3. Stella and Lebron (the cats) are obsessed with broccoli.

4. On Friday I got the AT&T mifi and now I officially have Internet. I have not had the internet for around a year and a half. It feels great typing on a real computer, but I have yet to update my blog on it!

5. I have so many projects to sew for other people, but I just want to sew something for myself.

6. My ex coworker, Devon, came to visit me and brought me a lucky neko as a gift! I feel like I haven't left the bank, today two bank customers called me and scheduled appointments :) I love that I get to still talk to the customers I liked!

7. Luke and I are sipping Kynsi's pink wine and I can't complain.

8. Goodnight.

Roll out the Barrels 2011

This is the wine situation at my house and I can't say that I am disappointed by it! I love wine!!!

This weekend I attended the event Roll Out the Barrels and had a blast! I was with Luke's grandparents, Linda and Tony, and Luke. Luke had never been wine tasting before and he enjoyed it very much, but was disturbed by the sight of a man wearing a necklace that doubled as a wine holder...

Anyway, I enjoyed the wines from Kynsi, Talley, Mike Signor, Chamisal, Laeticia, and Clesi. The best part was spending time with such loving and positive family members. Next week I am going to go tasting with my friend Libbi. Can you tell that I like wine? :)

Book I'm reading: The Help

Is this book good? Everyone raves about it, so I just bought it. I need to read it before the movie comes out because I never watch a movie before I read the book!

I'm a sailor lovin quiltin' fool

My quilt is sailor themed because my friends baby is going to have a sailor bedroom. The baby shower is on Sunday and I can't wait to give her the gift! I just finished it a few minutes ago and had to post pictures even though they aren't the best quality. My birthday is on July 18th, so maybe Luke is reading this and will realize that I need a real camera ;)

I didn't buy enough of the blue fabric for the back. Oops! Luckily, I had some extra blue and white fabric to make it work.

The quilt is far from perfect, but with every project I make mistakes and learn new techniques. Next project: a gift for Luke's grandma.

Day one of the next chapter in my life.

Friday was my last day at the bank and it was a bittersweet one. Forgive me for continually using that word, but it describes my feelings perfectly. A lot of customers called or came in to the bank to say goodbye, which was so sweet! Some brought me thoughtful gifts that they made (butternut squash ravioli from Nicola at Mama's Meatball, mozerella made by Louie Tedone, bread from the owner of Farbs), some bought me gifts that they knew I would love (a money tree from Keesha, wine from Melora, a gift certificate to Beverlys from Jean), and my coworkers gave me the most amazing/perfect cards and gifts ever! I got spoiled.

Saying goodbye to my friends was difficult, especially when it came to my supervisor Sandy. She is someone I admire and have grown very close to over the last (almost) five years. I already miss her.

But today starts a new day and a new chapter for me: business owner. Today is my first day in the shop. Hopefully I pick things up quickly and don't let Luke down. I will say, I am looking forward to wearing jeans to work! :)

Mixed day

Today was very bittersweet. It was my last day at the bank and I am so sad because I will miss my coworkers and all my favorite customers. At the same time I am excited to be a business owner. I will write more about this later.

Who doesn't love surprises?

I love surprises! I came home after work and got this adorable thank you card in the mail from my friend Kala. I made Kala's future baby the animal print quilt for the baby shower. How cute is the thank you card?

Once I unfolded it I was so happy to get the sweet message inside. Seriously, that's the nicest card I have ever received, so I have to post a photo of it :)

One of my favorite customers gave me this as a going away present. I love it! I sent her this picture to let her know that I am not the only one that loves her gift.

I am lucky to have such thoughtful people in my life!

I love fabric

I splurged on fabric again this weekend... but I had a $20 gift certificate, so I don't feel bad. And I bought four pieces of fat quarters, so that wasn't too expensive. I am dying to get started on projects for myself, but I am working on a project for another baby.

Here is my lesson for the day: don't cut fabric when you are on the phone. I definitely said a few curse words, ask my friend Devon.

I bought three yards of this. I want to make a cute summer dress, but I am not sure what pattern/style to go for. Any suggestions?

Instant gratification project #1 - Napkins

Easy, easy, easy. And I'll actually use them. Plus, they match my pink, black, white, and green kitchen.

Now I have some nice napkins for our weekly Sunday dinnah (said in a Jersey Shore voice).

I wanted to do some decorating with my bedroom, but I wasn't sure what I could afford to do. The cheapest, quickest, and easiest thing is making pillowcases. I made another trip to Quiltin Cousins to buy the fabric I was eyeing on Saturday. No, I'm not a stalker for going in two days in a row, I swear!

Right off the bat I ran into a problem. I either can't do math, can't cut properly, or shouldn't have bought directional fabric. Or maybe all of the above. Anyway, I didn't have enough fabric for both pillows! I ended up using some extra fabric from my stash to finish the back of the pillow. I cut out a cat from the pattern and decided to try using a stitch I had never used from my sewing machine. My "mistake" ended up being one of my favorite parts of my pillowcase!

Lebron was very busy helping me, as usual.

The end product! The cat fabric is Michael Miller and the contrast fabric is Moda. Now we are sleeping in style!

A fabric weekend with my mom

This weekend my mom came to see me. We went to lunch and then she suggested that we go look at fabric. Um, how could I turn that down? I took her to my favorite place to buy fabric which is conveniently a few miles from my home, Quiltin Cousins.

Ok, the store is amazing for the following reasons:
1. The variety of fabric is good and everything is very cute.
2. There is a lot of vintage reproduction fabric, my favorite!
3. The owner Shawn is cool! She is so sweet and likes vintage/retro stuff as much as me!
4. Shawn does an awesome Julia Child impression.

My mom bought me the book pictured above. I can't wait to start sewing!

I made Kala and Mike's baby a quilt

Today was Kala's baby shower! Kala is one of my favorite friends. She is so sweet, has interesting things to say, and is an all around good person. That means that I have to make the baby something special! :) Kala and Mike aren't going to find out if they are having a boy or girl, so I tried to make the quilt gender neutral.

It is not a detailed quilt, but it is my first completed one! I learned how to tie the quilt and how to create and sew on binding. When I find out if the baby is a boy or girl I will make another new quilt and some other gifts as well. I can't wait to meet him/her!!!!! Kala will be such a good mom, congratulations to the soon to be mama.

Hello! I was on a steady roll of updating my journal every day, but I have been MIA for the last few days. I wish I had something exciting to report, but my life has revolved around QuickBooks and getting the business set up. Luckily, I have had some spare time to work on a gift for my friends baby shower tomorrow. Hopefully I will have photos of a finished project to show you.

One thing I have always been passionate about is reading. Normally, I can't put a book down when I get started, but the book I am reading is not holding my attention. I am not a book "quitter," but I may just have to quit this one. This will be the fourth book I have quit in my life, but I may go back to it in the future. The others are a biography on someone from WWII, One Hundred Years of Solitude (sorry Oprah), The Sun Also Rises, and another book that I can't remember.

Yesterday I bought this book, which I will hopefully like. Do you ever "quit" books?
