Food

This entry is in tribute to all the amazing food I have been eating. Lately I have been eating vegan food (no meat, dairy, or animal products). A lot of people think that choice limits what I can eat, but I disagree. Lately I have tried so many different foods that I normally wouldn't try and I have learned to become a better cook in the process. At least I think so :)

This first picture is of a bowl of ramen with veggies and tofu... that I didn't make. I got it this Saturday from my favorite sushi restaurant Izakaya Raku. If you live in Arroyo Grande you HAVE to try it. The people there are so nice and the food is amazing. Anyway, hot ramen on a cold day = a happy Asian!

I made this one: shelled edamame, corn, and sesame seeds in a soy sauce/rice vinegar sauce. Yum! Luke loved this one.

This was tonights dinner, and so far my favorite salad I have made in a while. Pear, green onion, and tempeh in a wasabi mayo sauce. So good! Leftovers for lunch too!

Fabrics and quilting

I got these beautiful Civil War reproduction fabrics from Quiltin Cousins in Pismo. Nothing really matches, so my quilt will be wild! Loves it.

Tonight I cut some of my fabric into strips and sewed them together. I will cut the strips into pieces and place the pieces into a square to make a "nine patch" quilt.

MY apron

I ALWAYS make aprons for other people, so I decided that I needed one too and made it! Sorry the picture is so small. It looks blurry when it's large. Stella insisted on being in the photo with me :)

I LOVE this fabric. Well, I love cats so anything in cat print is ok with me.

Lebron is soooo cute!

Sometime this week my friend Kacey is going fabric shopping with me. I am going to make her an apron too.

Black Dahlia Avenger

Today it is cold and rainy, the perfect weather to curl up with a book! Unfortunately, I am not home in front of my fake, electric, and warm fireplace. I'm in Luke's truck while he is running calls. I am not complaining, I will do anything to spend time with him! :)

I finished reading The Kitchen God's Wife last night, thank god, it took me forever to read because I wasn't that into the book. I started reading The Black Dahlia Avenger last night and I am hooked! I read the first 50 pages fairly quickly and I am ready for more. I need to finish this book asap because I borrowed it from my friend Ari about a year ago. I have been "borrowing" it for a little too long! Sorry, Ari.

Elizabeth Taylor

Of course this weeks photo had to be of Elizabeth Taylor. I don't know much about her, but when I first heard of her death I was very saddened. Of course I was sad that the world lost a great actress and humanitarian, but it made me sad to think that this is the end of Old Hollywood.

My favorite geisha. And a good book.

I am fascinated with the grace and beauty of geishas. When I was in Japan, I think it was Kyoto, but I could be wrong, I saw a few geishas walking around. If I can find the picture I will post it!

Quilting class

On a whim I decided to step out of my comfort zone and join a quilting class. I went in not knowing anyone, but left making a few acquaintances. I was initially very intimidated because all the women are older than me and they are all very experienced, but the women at my table turned out to be nice. On the plus side I will have lots of people to ask questions! The instructor is AMAZING and so patient with me. She even showed me how to do a little hand quilting. I would love to work on a Hawaiian hand quilt project for my wall.

Our class project is to make the quilt pictured above. I can't wait to make mine! I already have some Civil War reproduction fabric in mind from Quiltin Cousins. I will keep everyone posted on my progress. Once I get the basics down I would like to make a quilt for Luke and I... I think I have too many projects going on.

Graphic design

Over the last month I have been working on labels for a local lavender business. I designed a circle label and a rectangle label which can be used for their various lavender products. The owner is SO sweet and I am so excited to have worked with him. I will post photos of the labels once they are printed.

Dress

I made my first dress! It took forever to make, but it's finally done! I used a Simplicity pattern, which wasn't so simple for someone new to sewing.

I am showing off my pockets, the hardest part. Thanks to my coworker Devon for taking the photos :)

Jimmy Stewart

Jimmy Stewart is my husbands all time favorite actor. I don't know much about him, but I have watched some of his movies and Luke owns his book of poems. My favorite movie of his is The Philadelphia Story. Oh, and I like his swagger and his suits. Stylin.

Denise Linn

If you have been in my room lately, which none of you have unless you are a full on stalker, then you would see this book next to my bed. I have been slowly reading it in my "spare" time (ha!). My friend Cyndi told me a bit about Denise before I bought the book. She is internationally known, very sweet, and good at what she does. What makes her even cooler is the fact that she lives nearby in Paso Robles. On her facebook page I made a comment the other day about how nice the weather has been on the central coast. She "liked" my comment and this made me happy. What I am trying to say is that I am kind of a big deal.

KIDDING. But seriously. I want to go to one of her seminars. In a non stalker way.

Fabric

Currently drooling over this fabric. Future quilt? We will see! I went to the SLO Quilters meeting and got so inspired. My new grandma Vicki and her friends are very talented quilters, so hopefully I will pick up some tips from them.

Vegan sushi!

I made this for dinner and I am so full. It was so amazing that I didn't want to share with Luke :) The rolls are filled with avocado, a small amount of green onions, and tempeh in a spicy mayo sauce. Now I am going to have a piece of mango mochi for dessert. I just wish I had some leftovers for lunch!

This is a perfect example of why it takes me so long to sew a simple project.

I made this a few months back as a tribute to Clara Bow. I have not seen any of her movies, but I read her biography and I am so fascinated by her! She had so much spirit, I love it.

New purse

I have been thinking that I need a new purse. So I made one. It has a 20 inch zipper, pretty purple lining, and pockets for my iPhone and keys.

My sewing assistant HAD to be in the photo.

I love my new purse because I can throw important things in it, like books! I never want to be caught without a book in my bag.

Vintage Photo Friday

This weeks Vintage Photo Friday is dedicated to Jane Russell. I was lucky enough to meet Jane a few years back when I volunteered at a charity event. She was so sweet to me and was kind enough to take a photo with me. I was dying to ask her about her life in the movies and Howard Hughes, but I didn't.

I feel so fortunate to have met such a loving woman that has given so much to our local community.

I love gift certificates

Don't start the pregnancy rumors yet, this book is for my friends. Two of my good friends are pregnant and I want to make them custom gear, no store bought gifts from me!

I just got this today, so I haven't made any recipes, but it has great reviews online. This is my fourth book of hers and the first three did not disappoint. I am dying to make the pumpkin baked ziti with carmaelized onions and sage crumb topping. Oh, and the lemon bars. You cannot go wrong with lemon bars!!

Treasure from the garbage

Luke is an expert dumpster diver! Ok, technically he didn't go into the dumpster to get this, it was laying next to it, but still. Someone was throwing away this frame and he took it home because he knew that I would love it and I do :) I think I am going to get an old map to put on the inside. The search begins...
